The "Hidden Town" Lanesboro, Minnesota
|
On the bank of the South Fork of the Root River, in
one of Minnesota's most ancient and picturesque
valleys, stands Mrs. B's Historic Lanesboro Inn. In
the yard between the inn and the twisting river,
the conversations of birds, the soughing of the
wind, and the sound of flowing water can allow
you the perception of a different time, or what
may be even more valuable, a different perception
of time. The natural values that attracted
Lanesboro's first settlers have been retained in
Mrs. B's windows you can today look out on the
scene that could have been painted by Thomas
Cole or Grandma Moses. Walled by wooded
limestone bluffs, Lanesboro is Minnesota's "hidden
town" as you will discover - breathtakingly - on
the approach from Fountain or Preston.
When you are well satisfied at Mrs. B's, set
out to explore your surroundings. First
Lanesboro itself
(population 788). Main street is lined with
store fronts from the 1870's. Yet this is an
authentic town which conducts a healthy,
everyday life midst its antique merchants, a
winery, sausage makers, cafés, a charming
museum, a great summer stock theatre, and
refreshing variations to the stolid
businesses which make up the backbone of
any rural town. Witness the Lanesboro
livestock auction where magnificent
animals of the valley's beautiful farms are
bought and sold.
In the opposite direction, find Sylvan Park
tucked beneath the bluffs with trout ponds,
tennis courts, spacious picnic areas, and an
historic 1869 dam and waterfall. A
self-guided walking tour will introduce you
to a number of 19th century, Queen
Ann-style houses and their histories. At the
end of main street where it climbs into the
hills, is the town's challenging 9-hole golf
course.

~ Prayer for a Tenspeed Heart ~
Let the fire of my body propel and warm me and let each darkness reveal its plenitude.
Let the hills flatten under my wheels and let the eloquent curves yield up their good surprise.
Let my heart be obstinate when I need to climb and let my lowliest gears restrain my spinning down.
Let there be flatland, too, and into that glittering place let me stretch with the heart of a lover, at full speed, blind and intent.

As with things man-made, nature is also at its best
in Lanesboro. A play of nature left Lanesboro
blissfully free of mosquito's. The trail-head of the
DNR's renowned Root River Trail is just down the
street. This paved path of over 60 miles parallels
soaring limestone bluffs and crosses over 50
bridges as it follows the snaking river, offering
hikers, bikers, and skiers easy access to a valley
untouched by glaciation. Wild life abounds.
Turkeys, hawks, grouse, and eagles are common
sights. Birders have some of the best opportunities
in the state to fill out their lists. Trout fishing,
hunting, and canoeing are excellent here. The
largest trout hatchery in the state is a few miles
down the road as is the Eagle Bluff Environmental
Learning Center where you can receive an
education on the management of oak forests and
the commercial production of the delicious Shitake
mushroom. Spelunkers or the plain curious can
enter the subterranean world on guided tours in
three nearby caves. Take a country drive following
one of the many self-guided car tours.
You might share the road with horse and buggy
belonging to our large Amish community.
